Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Today I thought I'd talk about family. Why? We are, after all, in Florida for the wedding of a very close friend. His name is Earl. I've known him for about 16 years. That's why we went to the trouble and expense of flying to Florida from Louisiana. It was important for me to be there on this special day. The day he finally married Therese. And believe me, if he didn't she was gonna kill him!
*FYI - To me, family is much more than blood relations. Family is the people that we care about, the people that enrich our lives, the people we lean on, the people that lean on us. Distance has always separated me from most of my blood relations. So, I've always relied on my extended family for support. The boys, for instance, are my brothers. Blood relatives or not, we've been through a lot together. That counts for something! And Sharon, she's the one that keeps me grounded. She doesn't let me forget who I am and where I came from, but still lets me play rock star from time to time. Life isn't worth crap with out the people you love. Be good to them, take care of them, and they'll take are of you.
Anyway, back to the wedding. Earlier this month Riki and I drove down for Earl's bachelor party. He wanted to have it early 'cuz he didn't want too many of his family members there. (and rightfully so) It was a great time! We visited some old points of interest. Like the place we all met. Ocean Club. (I've mentioned it in my bio) It was recently bulldozed, so we made a toast on its crumbled foundation. Then we went to the Red Lobster where Earl and Therese met. (also recently bulldozed) Boy this sure makes me feel old! Then, of course, we went to a strip club. And what do ya' know? We know a lot of the girls! (go figure!) All had a great time and we got to watch Earl pole dance!
They had their wedding on the beach on Thanksgiving morning. I know it sounds weird but it was a beautiful day and the ceremony was just beautiful! Over 100 people showed up. It was quite a reunion. And then we ate turkey! Six of them!
Let me tell you, I ate way too much! And then the boys and I had to rush to the airport to catch our plane back to New Orleans so we could perform the next day. There's nothing like rushing to catch a plane stuffed and half in the bag. But that's all in days work for a Tortuga. The things we do for our friends and family! But I'd do it again in a second!
