Firstly, let me just point out my handy-skills. Last year I redid most of the drain plumbing in my kitchen in order to support having a garbage disposal. Well, I finally got one installed. I know, it makes me a bit of a home-geek. But after living without one for seven years it is oh-so-nice. Yes, I know, not exactly the scintillating details of my life you thought you'd be getting is it?
Celebrated two birthdays this month. The owner of my CrossFit gym, Andy Hendel, turned 50 this month. There was a large party at the gym, I'd say a good 50-80 people showed up. Surprisingly no spontaneous workouts happened. Although we did break open the piñata by throwing medicine balls at it.
Not to be outdone, my good frien Alex Pendergrass--felow CrossFit'er and ex-tilt crew at Carolina--celebrated her 21st birthday. So we all took her out to a local wine bar for some good reds.
Jessica also had a birthday this month, so I drove down to Atlanta to help celebrate. We hit a local famous burger joint called the Varsity. Then we say a mythical creatures exhibit at the Fenbrook Museum. Krakken, big foot, mermaids, dragons, roks, unicorns. They all made an appearance.
Also there were two competitions this month. The start of the CrossFit Games Open is the first. With the explosive growth of CrossFit, they have changed how they do the first round of the games. Now you sign-up online. Once a week a new workout is posted. You must either go do it at a CrossFit affiliate, or make a video of you doing the workout and post that online. Then you go hit the site and enter your time/score and it's validated. The world is broken up into regions, and if after six weeks you finish in the top 60 of your region, you go compete in a regional event. Those events will be a weekend-long event. As of now, I'm about #200 in my region. And while I'm gaining some ground, I don't think I'll be making regionals as an individual. Odds are good that our gym will be able to go as a team, however. Unfortunately, the Mid-Atlantic regionals is the same weekend as South Dakota for us. So even then, I won't be able to attend. But you better believe I'll have a blast in SD!!
Also I got a four-man team together form the gym to run an obstacle race. It was The O-Run in Florence, SC. Brian Buchannan, Denton Worrel, Matt DiMarco and myself—and our race crew, Megan Canny—got up early one Saturday and headed down to the race. It was almost perfect weather for a race. Slightly chilly, but as soon as you get running you warm right up. The race was run in heats with the next team starting one minute after the previous team. This prevented bottle-necks at all of the obstacles. And speaking of obstacles, theywere great. I'd say there were 20-30 of them, with 400-800 Meter runs between them (on average). Ladder climbs, low crawls, hay bale leaps, farmer walks, balance beams, stretcher carries. And to finish it off, a 600M run with a giant log across all our backs. Just as we drop the log they grab our team number, crunch the numbers and give us our time “40:20! You're in the lead by one second!” Damn that felt good! We ended up hanging out for the rest of the day—our egos getting the better of us—and our time held. CrossFit in general was the big winner that day though, the top three teams were all from CrossFit gyms. 😀
Okay, time for me to get this posted and start getting ready for Oklahoma!
